Valley is situated on old caravan route at confluence of Shayok and Nubra rivers. Visit charming Deskit - tiny capital of Nubra. Visit Deskit Gompa perched on rocky spur with commanding view of entire valley. See stunning 106-feet high statue of Maitreya Buddha atop hill. From Deskit drive to Hunder past sand dunes. Get acquainted with famous Bactrian camels - shaggy double-humped animals (camel ride optional, direct payment). Dinner and overnight in camp/hotel at Nubra.
Full day excursion from Nubra to remote village of Turtuk - one of Ladakh's most fascinating and recently opened destinations. Travel through stunning mountain landscapes and traditional villages in region once part of Baltistan. Recaptured by India in 1971, Turtuk offers unique cultural experience with warm locals, rich history, and scenic beauty. Explore this border village with its apricot orchards, traditional Balti architecture, and incredible mountain views. After exploring Turtuk, return to Nubra Valley by evening. Distance: 165 Kms | Drive: 5-6 hours | Pangong Lake: 14,500 ft. After breakfast drive to Pangong Lake via Shayok shortcut - a beautiful route. Road follows Shayok River, climbs up mountain before descending into Shayok village. Takes less than hour to reach Shayok - a rather big village surrounded by barren mountains in picturesque setting. Continue via Tang Tse to reach Spangmik (Pangong). Afternoon reach Pangong Lake - famous high-altitude lake spanning India and China. Hanle is renowned for Indian Astronomical Observatory - one of highest observatories in world at 4,500 meters, offering spectacular star-gazing opportunities. Historically, it is believed that King Sengge Namgyal passed away here while returning from expedition against Mongols. Continue to Puga Valley, home to well-maintained government school for children of nearby nomadic communities. Visit the famous hot springs with natural methane gas vents - unique geothermal features where you can see gas bubbling from ground.
